Rhythm trainer
The metronome drops out for a few bars while you keep playing. When it comes back in, you hear straight away whether you rushed or dragged.
How to use it
- Choose how many bars the metronome plays: 1, 2, 4 or 8.
- Choose how many silent bars follow: 1, 2 or 4.
- Load it and press Start. The cycle repeats: click, silence, click.
- In the silent bars the beat keeps moving on screen, so you can check yourself, or look away and trust your time.
Why practise with silent bars
A metronome that always clicks can carry you. Taking it away for a bar or two shows whether the time is really yours. Start with 4 bars of click and 1 silent bar, then lengthen the gaps until you can hold the tempo through 4 silent bars.
Also known as
A gap click, a muted-bar or silent-bar metronome. Combine it with the tempo trainer or a polyrhythm metronome, whose pulses go silent in the gaps too. By link: /app/?play=2&mute=2.
Questions
- What is a gap click?
- A metronome pattern that clicks for some bars and stays silent for others. You keep playing through the gaps, and the click coming back tells you whether you stayed in time.
- How long should the gaps be?
- Start with one silent bar after four bars of click. When you land on the beat every time, try 2 bars on and 2 off, then 4 silent bars.
- Do the polyrhythm pulses go silent too?
- Yes. The whole click drops out in the silent bars, pulses included.
- Is it free?
- Yes, with no ads and no account needed, in any browser.
